Tournament types, eligibility and time controls

District-level tournaments

Regular tournaments conducted within Tirupur district for local participation. They may be open events or divided into age categories. An independently organised event may be described as TDCA-approved only after receiving final TDCA approval.

State-level tournaments

Regular tournaments promoted for participation from across Tamil Nadu. They may be open or age-category events. Calling an event state-level describes its participation scope; it does not by itself make the event an official State Championship or a selection event.

District Championships and District Selections

Official TDCA events that award a district title, select eligible Tirupur players for the next recognised level, or do both. Each event states its categories, eligibility rules, number of qualifiers and exact selection conditions.

FIDE-rated tournaments

Tournaments conducted under the applicable rating requirements, with eligible game results submitted for FIDE rating. A FIDE-rated event may be district-level, state-level, open or restricted; FIDE-rated describes its rating status, not its geographical level.

Tamil Nadu State Championships and selections

Official state events conducted or recognised through TNSCA. Relevant age-category and other State Championships act as the recognised selection or eligibility route for the corresponding National Championship, subject to the applicable federation rules.

Practice tournaments

Training-focused events intended to give players regular competitive practice and experience with clocks, pairings and tournament conditions. They do not award an official district or state title unless explicitly stated.

Classification by time control

• Standard or classical — longer games
• Rapid — faster games that still allow more thinking time than blitz
• Blitz — very fast games
• The exact time control is stated for each event
• The level and time control are independent: an event may be a district-level rapid tournament or a FIDE-rated classical tournament

Eligibility and format

Any of these events may be open, age-category, school-only, team, invitational or otherwise restricted. The event prospectus confirms who may enter and what registrations are required.
