Knows the basic rules
The child can set up the board, move every piece legally, recognise check and checkmate, and understands the main special rules.
Can play independently
The child can complete a game without a parent or coach telling them what move to make. Occasional questions for the arbiter are normal.
Can use a clock at a basic level
The child knows how to press the clock after moving. Complete confidence is not necessary; a little practice before the event helps.
Can remain engaged for one game
The child can sit and play for roughly the expected duration of the event’s games, with normal breaks between rounds.
Is willing to win and lose
Some disappointment is normal. The child should be willing to shake hands, follow instructions and continue after a loss.
Most importantly—the child wants to try
A first event should be voluntary and low-pressure. Choose an age-appropriate or beginner-suitable event and treat the day as a learning experience.
