1. Learn and enjoy the basics
Build confidence with legal moves, checkmates, simple tactics and plenty of complete games.
2. Play practice games
Use club sessions, school activities, friendly games and practice events to become comfortable with clocks and independent play.
3. Try a suitable local tournament
Choose an event matching the child’s age, readiness and interest. The first goal is to understand the experience.
4. Participate regularly
Review games, improve gradually and enter district events when the child continues to enjoy competing.
5. Explore championships and higher levels
District championships, selections, state events and FIDE-rated tournaments may become appropriate as experience grows. The official prospectus always determines eligibility.
